Pre-Writing Activities and Scissor Skills Activities

Science, Phonics, Vocab, Math and Following Directions Activities

Number Writing – Research shows that automatic number recognitions is a critical element for math success!  Though children will naturally develop their own handwriting style as they become more confident, all kids need to learn the basic strokes (and sequence of strokes) involved in each numeral and number word’s formation.  In this way, tracing and copying rows of numerals and number words strengthens learning and provides kinesthetic reinforcement.

Pre-Handwriting – This practice gives children the opportunity to learn how to control a pencil and then learn specific handwriting strokes, which enables them to print a variety of alphabet letters.

First, children are taught how to make “vertical straight lines” and then “horizontal straight lines.”  When children are able to do these lines they are then able to print “l, i, L, t, T, F, E, H and I.”  Children immediately feel successful and are learning correct handwriting skills.

Learn to Print –  This program teaches young children handwriting strokes and how to print. The letters here are presented developmentally, rather than alphabetically.  This presents handwriting in a developmental sequence and provides children with the opportunity to be able to visually identify the letters, as well as how to learn to print.

Scissor Skills – The activities in this program have been purposely designed to teach children how to cut simple shapes and designs to more complex cutting skills.  Scissoring is a developmental skill that emerges as early as age 2 through exposure and repetitive use of the tool.  Children need strength and dexterity in their fingers and hands before manipulating a cutting tool. Handedness is established during the preschool years.

Following Directions – Following directions is a life skill.  Everyone needs to be able to follow directions and be able to give directions.  The ideas in this program focus on helping young learners to:
  • Listen to and follow oral directions accurately
  • Interpret cues to follow pictured directions
  • Read simple written directions
  • Give oral directions for completing a task

Sight Words – Sight words are the most commonly used words in the English language (i.e. the, it, and). Mastering the recognition, pronunciation and spelling of these words is essential for young students learning to read. This program teaches 100 sight words through mini interactive books, providing children with a strong foundation of basic words is one of the most important steps to help them become productive and effective readers.

Samson Sight Words Internet Program – Sight words with Samson is an educational software program that helps children how to read by reinforcing their comprehension of the most commonly used words in the English language.  The software provides a fun and engaging learning environment that encourages children to practice and master the fundamentals required to become a strong reader.  This program will allow students to work with parents at home as well as in a classroom environment while at daycare.
